Many senior citizens freely admit that they fear growing older more than they fear death. The prospect of becoming increasingly frail and dependent in a society which worships strength and self-reliance, and of losing family and lifetime friends can understandably make the specter of old age a frightening one.
Does senior living have to be a time of physical failing and emotional loss? Of course aging brings physical deterioration, and time brings the loss of loved ones, but senior living can still bring growth and new awareness. Those who are emotionally, financially, and socially ready to take on the challenges of aging are the ones for whom senior living can actually bring happiness.

Every household has its own traditions, of course, but in our house growing up we were allowed to go into our stockings before our parents got up. The idea behind this, I’m sure, was to allow mommy and daddy to sleep in past four a.m., which is of course when we would have woken them up if we’d had to wait until they were up to enjoy any Christmas! With this in mind, gifts in our stockings were intended to occupy us until everyone had slept in as long as they wished and we could get on with the business of presents. Here are some ideas for stuffing stockings for all you Santa’s helpers out there.

I don’t know about you but I’m an old fashioned girl. I like to be able to touch my scrapbook pages in printed form. Looking at them on the PC screen just doesn’t do it for me. I’m sorry, until they’re printed out they’re just not real.
But I don’t want to go to the trouble and expense of taking my 12×12 inch layout files to a professional printer to get it done. I want instant gratification.
However, as is the case with most of you I expect, I only have a regular A4 or Letter width printer.

The tradition of putting wreaths on doors and walls started in the 7th century B.C. when tree branches were used to crown the winners of the Olympic games. When exactly the wreath moved from the head to the door is unknown but the athletes probably hung their crowns on their wall and it took off from there.
One of the most popular holiday decorations is the Christmas wreath. Christmas wreaths are hung on doors, windows, fences, gates, from the stairway with garland or over the fireplace and used as centerpieces or advent wreaths on the table. Homes or offices don’t seem festive during the holiday season without this favorite decoration. Many people with second homes they don’t use during the holiday season still make sure there’s a wreath on the door to share the spirit of the season with their neighbors.

While cleanliness and a courteous staff are important criteria for evaluating a retirement home, there is more to consider before making your choice. Human beings require constant stimulation, with mental and physical exercise. The curiosity and zest for life a person naturally feels does not go away with age. Rather, a lack of excitement and even depression can set in because of inactivity. If a resident feels like a burden to the family and remains bored in his/her room all day, then that is hardly a life worth living! On the contrary, activity stimulates the mind and body and leads to happiness, better health and a retirement that is actually enjoyable. When choosing a senior living facility, make sure that the facility provides the therapy and activities that are healthy for its residents.

For today’s column, we’re going to talk about storage options for our scrapbook, paper and beading supplies. If you’re a regular reader of mine, you know I’m always saying, “Go vertical!” And it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about a craft room, kitchen, bedroom or garage; to maximize space you must go vertical.
I love the upright towers for storing scrapbook sheets and stamp pads. If you purchase the plastic variety, there are pros and cons to them. On the plus side, they’re inexpensive and the drawers are usually clear, enabling you to see their contents. On the downside, the drawers are flimsy when partially pulled out. Your other option is to reuse an old upright wooden chest of drawers. You may already have something like this tucked away in your garage or basement–go check it out now! (well, not right at this exact moment)
